At De Beauvoir, we are passionate about developing children’s enquiry skills, scientific knowledge, understanding and interest in the world around them. Children are provided with a range of experiences in Early Years to develop their Understanding of the World, and this early scientific knowledge and understanding is built on in KS1 and KS2 through weekly science lessons.

We want all pupils to see themselves as scientists and understand the uses and impact of science today and in the future. The topics within the National Curriculum have been mapped to ensure progression in biology, chemistry and physics, and, where possible, links to topics to allow for cross-curricular links.
We have been particularly mindful after school closures to ensure children have not missed science content and therefore have looked carefully at the curriculum map to reteach certain topics. We are also maintained year group teaching for science to ensure children are taught all science topics and have a clear progression throughout their time in De Beauvoir.

We ensure all children have opportunities to work scientifically through a range of practical and hands-on investigations. Learning uses scientific investigations, as well as drama, dance, art and English to support the children’s understanding of key concepts and ideas.
Children develop their understanding of the properties of rocks and the pollination process.
Our edible garden supported pupils’ when learning about growing, the structure of plants, the importance of healthy eating and different habitats for minibeasts. We also visit a range of museums to support our learning and use opportunities to learn from the natural environment with visits to the local parks.
